In South Africa’s high unemployment environment, higher education institutions have a duty to support graduates as they transition from studies to the world of work. With youth unemployment in particular remaining stubbornly elevated, there is a growing need for universities to actively bridge the gap between academic qualifications and labour market needs, to help improve employment outcomes for the country’s young professionals, an education expert says.
“Even though statistics suggest that degree completion rates are improving, many young graduates continue to face significant challenges in securing suitable employment in the years immediately following graduation,” says Dr Renee Minnaar, Dean of Faculty: Hospitality and Tourism at Rosebank International South Africa.
“Too many graduates continue to experience underemployment or end up in roles that do not align with their field of study, highlighting persistent skills mismatches in the local labour market,” she says.
THE EMPLOYABILITY CHALLENGE IN SOUTH AFRICA
The country’s difficult economic conditions, combined with rapid technological changes and evolving employer expectations, have widened the gap between what graduates learn and what the job market demands, says Dr Minnaar.
“Many young professionals, particularly from disadvantaged backgrounds, struggle with limited practical experience, workplace readiness, and professional networks. This situation not only affects individual career prospects but also reduces the return on investment in higher education for students, families, and the public sector,” she says.
HOW HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS CAN BRIDGE THE GAP
There is an urgent need for SA institutions to expand support systems to better prepare graduates for the realities of the local and global job market. Recognising the unique economic pressures and structural challenges facing the country, institutions must move beyond traditional academic delivery alone, to offer more integrated, practical, and industry-aligned forms of support that address both immediate employability needs and long-term career adaptability.
This can be achieved by introducing programmes such as:
Work-Integrated Learning and Internships
Institutions should strengthen partnerships with government, private sector companies, and state-owned enterprises to offer structured internships, learnerships, and experiential learning opportunities. These programmes give students valuable workplace exposure before graduation.
Dedicated Career Development Services
Career Centres can be established to provide comprehensive assistance, including developing an understanding of ATS systems, CV and cover letter support, interview preparation, psychometric testing practice, and job placement assistance. Institutions should also leverage digital platforms and alumni databases to connect students with potential employers.
Curriculum Alignment with Industry Needs
Universities should collaborate with sector bodies, professional councils, and employers to update programmes. This includes incorporating digital skills, data analytics, entrepreneurship, green economy competencies, and other priority areas identified in the national skills strategy.
Mentorship and Alumni Networks
Strong alumni engagement initiatives can be established, to link final-year students with working professionals who offer guidance on navigating the South African job market, understanding employment equity requirements, and building long-term careers.
Soft Skills and Holistic Development
Workshops focusing on communication, leadership, problem-solving, financial literacy, and personal branding can help graduates present themselves effectively and adapt to workplace culture.
“Institutions that closely monitor graduate employment outcomes, gather feedback from employers, and continuously refine their offerings tend to achieve stronger results for their students. Universities that treat employability as a core part of their mandate are not only serving their students better, but are also contributing meaningfully to national development goals and economic recovery,” says Dr Minnaar.
“By strengthening the bridge between higher education and employment, South African universities have a critical opportunity to help reduce youth unemployment and build a more skilled workforce.”
