    Subject choices: A parent guide

The second half of the academic year often proves to be a daunting one for Grade Nine students, as they have to make crucial subject choices for the Further Education and Training (FET) phase. These decisions will significantly influence their academic journey and future career opportunities.

“The subjects selected at high school directly influences future career options, which is why the correct subject combination is imperative. However, it is quite common for students to be uncertain about their career choices at this stage,” says Ivan Horn, Principal: Abbotts College Rondebosch.

“This is perfectly understandable given the vast range of possible careers as well as the emergence of new careers, and the fact that students are expected to make this decision at 14 or 15 years old.”

Horn says there are a few main variables for parents and students to consider before making their choices.

The battle between Mathematics & Mathematical Literacy

One of the most significant decisions in subject selection is choosing between Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy. It is essential to understand that Mathematics open more doors for future studies and career opportunities than Mathematical Literacy. However, the decision should be based on your child’s aptitude and interest in the subject, and it is also important to understand the stress attached to Mathematics. One should use Grade 9 Mathematic results as a guide, as well as looking at one’s career aspirations to make this difficult choice.

Mathematical Literacy in its own respect teaches students invaluable skills to contribute meaningfully to society.

“In my experience as an educator and principal, I have seen many students find fulfilling and rewarding careers with their options still open to them with Mathematical Literacy as a subject,” says Horn.

    Considerations for Mathematics

If your child has demonstrated a strong aptitude and interest in Mathematics, this subject can provide numerous opportunities in fields such as engineering, sciences, finance, and technology. Consistent performance in Mathematics up to this point is a good indicator of future success. Encourage your child to continue if they are meeting or exceeding pass requirements.

    Considerations for Mathematical Literacy

For students who struggle with Mathematics and experience significant anxiety, Mathematical Literacy is a viable and practical alternative.

“I have seen where students opted for Mathematical Literacy, it freed up time and mental energy, allowing students to focus and perform better in other subjects too. If your child is not meeting the pass requirements in Mathematics, it may be more beneficial for them to switch to Mathematical Literacy rather than continue to struggle and not achieve,” Horn says.

    Other subjects

Consider your child’s performance in their current subjects as an indicator of their strengths and areas for improvement.

“You can review the recent mid-year report and perhaps even the previous year’s reports. Consult with the school, as counsellors and teachers are available to discuss your child’s interests, strengths, and potential career paths.”

It is also important to attend a school’s information sessions, as most would host them, to gain a better understanding of the subjects offered and their implications for future studies and careers.

“Selecting the right subjects for the FET phase is a significant decision that requires careful consideration of your child’s interests, strengths, and career aspirations. We encourage you to support your child in making choices that align with their abilities and future goals,” says Horn.
