Occupational Certificates 101: The complete how-to-guide for students & parents

Over the past decade, the popularity of occupational certificates has been steadily increasing among students and employers alike, due to the need to match specific roles with job-relevant skills and the accessibility of the qualifications, respectively. However few prospective students are aware of this alternative study route, which is attractive because it provides access to those specific skills needed to enter a vocational career.

Siyavuya Makubalo, Marketing Manager at Oxbridge Academy, a division of private education provider ADvTECH, says it is important for prospective students to take time to investigate all their options to ensure they correctly match their aspirations with the study route that will turn vision into reality effectively and, if possible, affordably.

“Occupational certificates are essential qualifications that empower individuals to gain practical skills and knowledge tailored for specific trades or occupations, rather than provide them with mostly academic knowledge,” Makubalo says.

“These qualifications are nationally recognised, and show that the student has demonstrated competence in a specific occupation or trade. These certificates are developed under the oversight of the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) and are designed to equip learners with the necessary skills and knowledge required in various industries,” she says.

She adds however that occupational certificates are not widely understood by prospective students, despite their attractiveness.

“To equip interested students and parents, we have compiled an easy-to-understand overview, to equip them with the knowledge to make informed decisions about the future.”

WHO CAN OBTAIN AN OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATE?

Anyone interested in pursuing a career in a specific trade or occupation can obtain an occupational certificate. This includes:

    • School leavers who want to enter the workforce without pursuing traditional academic routes. You do not need to have Matric to enrol for an occupational certificate.
    • Individuals seeking career advancement or a change in their professional path.
    • Those looking to enhance their skills in a particular field or industry.

    BENEFITS OF OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATES

    • Enhanced employability: Students develop practical skills that make them highly sought after by employers, increasing their chances of securing employment.
    • Industry-relevant skills: The training emphasises hands-on experience and practical knowledge, ensuring students are job-ready from day one.
    • Recognition: These qualifications are nationally recognised, providing credibility in the job market and facilitating career progression.
    • Pathway to further education: Occupational certificates can serve as stepping stones to higher qualifications or specialised training programmes.

    ACCREDITATION REQUIREMENTS

To ensure quality and relevance, it is essential to check for accreditation when pursuing an occupational certificate. Key points include:

    • Ensure that the training provider is accredited by the QCTO.
    • Verify that the specific occupational qualification is registered with the QCTO.
    • Look for compliance with industry standards and alignment with the National Qualifications Framework (NQF)

    EMPLOYER RECOGNITION

Employers widely recognise occupational certificates as valid qualifications. The emphasis on practical skills and industry relevance makes these certifications valuable assets for job seekers. Many employers actively seek candidates with occupational certificates due to their readiness to contribute effectively in their roles from the outset.

    CHOOSING A QUALIFICATION AND INSTITUTION

Identify the specific occupational certificate that aligns with your career goals and the field in which you are interested. Ensure that the institution and qualification are registered with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and quality assured by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO).

Do your homework before you enrol with an institution, to ensure they are able to provide the necessary materials and support to ensure successful study. If you are unsure of what you want to study, reach out to a credible institution for support and guidance.

“Occupational certificates offer a robust pathway for individuals aiming to build successful careers in various industries. By understanding what these qualifications entail, who can pursue them, their benefits, and how they are recognised by employers, prospective students will be able to make informed study and career decisions, which may better align with their personal goals and circumstances than full-time multi-year degree study,” Makubalo says.
